BADAKHSHAN: Afghanistan’s Nusay district is facing a communications blackout and heightened security measures as fighting between Taliban forces and fighters loyal to dissident commander Juma Khan Fateh enters its fifth day.
A resident of the northeastern district told the media that telephone networks had been shut down and Wi-Fi devices confiscated. The resident contacted the outlet using a mobile internet network from neighbouring Tajikistan.
According to the resident, Taliban authorities have imposed a night-time curfew in the district centre, prohibiting gatherings and movement after dark.
Residents were also warned against using phones and other forms of communication. The source said fear had left many people reluctant to leave their homes even during daylight hours.
Fighting spreads
The resident said there was no major fighting around the district centre from Friday night into Saturday. Other sources, however, reported that clashes had spread to the Shakh Dara area, controlled by Fateh’s forces.

The Taliban has deployed thousands of additional troops alongside heavy military equipment as it increases pressure on Fateh’s fighters.
Sources also said that Taliban intelligence forces had taken control of the district health centre and removed patients and local medical workers.
One elderly man died after being prevented from entering the clinic.
Residents in neighbouring Shekay, Kuf Ab and Maimay districts have also reported increased security pressure, with several civilians detained by Taliban intelligence forces.
