NEW DELHI: After nearly three decades of marriage, Indian music legend A.R. Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have made the decision to part ways.
The news was confirmed by Saira Banu’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, as reported by The Times of India. Shah described the separation as the result of profound emotional strain within the relationship.
In a statement, Shah shared that Banu had made the difficult choice to separate after years of trying to reconcile the growing tensions between her and Rahman.
“Despite their deep affection for one another, the couple has found the difficulties they’ve faced over time to be insurmountable,” the lawyer said as quoted by The Times of India.
“This decision was not made lightly, but after careful consideration of their personal well-being,” the official statement read.
The statement continued, with Mrs. Banu expressing the emotional weight of the situation. “It is with great pain that Saira has come to this conclusion,” Shah said.
“She asks for privacy and understanding as she navigates this profoundly difficult chapter of her life.”
The couple, who married in 1995 in an arrangement facilitated by Rahman’s mother, have three children together: Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.
The separation marks the end of a long marriage that has drawn public attention due to Rahman’s immense fame as one of the world’s most celebrated composers and musicians.
