PYONGYANG: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin have exchanged letters expressing their resolve to strengthen bilateral ties, western media reported on Tuesday.
According to reports the letters mark the 78th anniversary of Korea’s independence from Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule. South Korea observe a national holiday on the day.
North Korea, Russia Vow to Strengthen Bilateral Ties
In his letter to Putin, Kim said the two countries’ friendship which started in World War II with victory over Japan is now moving in a positive direction with a joint struggle to smash the imperialist forces and hegemony.
The United States has recently accused North Korea of giving military arsenal to Russia against Ukraine. Pyongyang and Moscow have denied such allegations.

Last month, Russia’s defence minister stood with Kim to review North Korea’s nuclear-capable missiles and drones at a military parade in Pyongyang.
The leaders of South Korea, the US and Japan are scheduled to hold a trilateral summit on August 18 in Camp David, to discuss security cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
