BAKU: The ongoing dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia has intensified as Azerbaijan leveled accusations against Armenia of amassing troops along their shared border, raising concerns of potential military provocations. However, Armenia dismissed these claims as disinformation, exacerbating tensions between the two neighboring countries.
Tensions have escalated in recent days as Armenia accused Azerbaijan of imposing a blockade on Armenians residing in the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Yerevan sought intervention from the United Nations to address the situation, further fueling the existing animosity.
Baku’s foreign ministry claimed that a substantial concentration of weapons, military equipment, and personnel had been observed along the state border, suggesting a potential military venture. Additionally, Azerbaijan accused Armenia of fortifying military infrastructure within Nagorno-Karabakh, an area under the presence of Russian peacekeepers since 2020. The foreign ministry criticized Armenia for undermining ongoing peace initiatives by resorting to UN involvement.
Armenia Denies Azerbaijan’s Allegations
In response, Yerevan vehemently denied the allegations, asserting that it had not amassed weaponry or troops near the border or within Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia dismissed Azerbaijan’s assertions as divorced from reality, further contributing to the escalating exchange of claims.
The long-standing feud between these Caucasus neighbors centers around Nagorno-Karabakh, an internationally recognized part of Azerbaijan. This dispute has spanned decades and resulted in two devastating wars over the territory during the 1980s.
Amid these conflicts, Armenia has repeatedly accused Azerbaijan of obstructing traffic through the Lachin corridor, a critical mountainous road linking Armenia to Armenian-populated settlements in Nagorno-Karabakh. The ongoing disputes and military posturing have stymied efforts to achieve a lasting peace settlement, despite mediation initiatives by global players such as the European Union, the United States, and Russia.
