KHARTOUM: Sudan’s Health Ministry said on Tuesday that random shelling killed as many as 34 people, including children, in a market in Omdurman. Reuters reported that most of the casualties were truck drivers and market dealers.

Meanwhile, Sudan’s government refused to attend a regional meeting to end nearly three months of intense fighting, blaming Kenya, which chaired the talks, for favoring the rival party. In a statement, the foreign ministry of Sudan demanded to remove Kenyan President William Ruto as the head of the negotiations.
Earlier, an airstrike killed as many as 22 people, health officials said. According to Western media, the airstrike occurred in Dar es Salaam, Omdurman, in Sudan. Health officials said that dozens of people were injured in the airstrike. The Ministry of Health also posted a video that showed dead bodies and citizens making an effort to pull the dead people from the debris. Others tried to assist the injured people.
The UN also issued a grave warning on Sunday, stating that conflict-ridden Sudan is on the brink of descending into a “full-scale civil war” that could have far-reaching consequences for the entire region. UN chief Antonio Guterres condemned the air strike that killed at least 22 people in Sudan Saturday, according to a statement.
The Secretary-General is also shocked by reports of large-scale violence across Sudan. UNSG also offered his deep condolences to the victims’ families and expressed hopes for a speedy recovery to the dozens who were wounded, the statement maintained.
The war broke out in mid-April, plugging months of growing tensions between the army, commanded by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the RSF, led by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
Sudan’s Health Minister Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim said last month that over 3,000 people were killed and more than 6,000 injured in the clashes between the two sides during the conflict. Over 2.9 million people have fled their areas to safer places inside Sudan or crossed into other countries, the UN said.
