LONDON: President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, is visiting the United Kingdom to meet prime minister Rishi Sunak.

He said he would meet his “friend” Sunak to hold “substantive negotiations.” The United Kingdom announced it would supply Ukraine with long, small-range missiles to fight the Russian invasion. Zelensky has recently met Western leaders seeking to bolster support for Ukraine.

He said on Twitter that “the United Kingdom is a leader when it comes to extending our capabilities on the ground level and in the air. This cooperation would continue today,”

No 10 said Sunak would reiterate the significance of providing a full support package to Ukraine. The prime minister said, “We must not let them down,” and added it was “a crucial moment” in Ukraine’s war effort.

“The front lines of Russia’s war of aggression may be in Ukraine, but the fault lines stretch worldwide. We want to ensure Ukraine succeeds and Putin’s barbarism is not rewarded.” Those in government characterised the visit as a courtesy and a catch-up rather than talks, and the BBC has been told, with one source adding, “There’s always business to be done.”

The meeting between the leaders is expected to not last more than a couple of hours. Zelensky’s trip to the UK would be the fourth stop on a European tour, including meetings in Paris, Rome, and Berlin.

In February, Zelensky’s visited London for the first time since the Ukraine/Russia war started. He attended an audience with the King of the UK and addressed Parliament.
