BELGRADE: At least eight children were killed when a student reportedly started shooting inside his own elementary school in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, government-owned news agency Tanjug said.

Tanjug said that a security guard was also slain. According to Serbia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, six additional children and one teacher have been hospitalised for wounds.

According to the ministry, the 14-year-old student was reportedly targeting his own school and has since been detained.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the department said that it was notified at 8:40 am local time that a shooting had taken place at the Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School in the affluent neighbourhood of Vraar in the Serbian capital.

All available police officers were sent to the area, where they entered the school property right away and detained a kid, a seventh-grader who is thought to have fired multiple bullets from his father’s revolver towards pupils and the security officer.

According to the ministry statement, “the injured are receiving medical attention while the police investigate the circumstances and details that led to this incident.”
