BEIJING: China’s Special Envoy for Middle East affairs, Zhai Jun, has reiterated China’s commitment to promoting an early and proper settlement of the Palestinian issue. Speaking to Middle East envoys in Beijing on Friday, Zhai expressed deep concern over the heightened conflict between Israel and the Palestinians and called for maximum restraint and calm from all sides.
The envoy’s comments came as Israeli warplanes carried out a series of bombings on military sites belonging to the Hamas and Islamic Jihad groups in the Gaza Strip in response to what Israel said were missile attacks from Hamas in recent days. The bombings also targeted agricultural and open areas, as well as watchtowers on the eastern border.
In retaliation, Palestinian factions fired shells toward Israeli towns, most of which were intercepted by the Israeli air defense system Iron Dome. The escalation of violence has raised fears of a wider conflict in the region.
China’s support for Palestinian cause
