LAHORE: Candidates for the Punjab Assembly election can submit their nomination papers to the respective Returning Officers from March 12 to 14, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The election watchdog said in a statement that the candidates’ names will be released on March 15, while the nomination papers will continue to be scrutinized until March 22. Appeals against the rejection or approval of nomination papers may be submitted by the 27th. The appellate tribunal will decide the appeals by the third of the following month. On the 4th, the updated list of applicants will be released.
April 5 last day for withdrawal of nomination papers
The candidates can withdraw their nomination papers by April 5, and election symbols to the candidates would be allotted by April 6, the ECP said. It added, “the polling would be held on April 30.”
However, the security institutions have opposed the move of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold elections in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab. In a meeting with ECP officials on Friday, the security institutions briefed the participants about the critical law and order situation in both provinces. The security institutions’ representatives opposed conducting elections in KP and Punjab.
The ECP will decide the matter after consulting other institutions, said the sources.
