ANKARA: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has admitted “shortcomings” following criticism of his government’s response to the devastating earthquake that has killed more than 15,000 people in Syria and Turkey.
As criticism mounted online, he visited one of the hardest-hit areas, quake epicentre Kahramanmaras, and admitted problems in the response. He added that there are problems and said that it is impossible to be ready for a disaster like this.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has condemned criticism of his government’s response to overwhelming earthquakes that have killed over 15,000 people in southern parts of Turkiye and northwest parts of Syria, media reported on Wednesday.

Tayyip Erdogan said that this is a time for solidarity and unity. “In a situation like this, I cannot stomach people doing negative campaigns for political gains,” Erdogan told media on his arrival in the southern province of the country.

President Tayyip Erdogan said that it was not possible to be prepared for such a natural disaster, but that his government would accelerate housing construction and rubble removal. Turkish officials confirmed that the death toll in his country had climbed to more than 9000.
