WASHINGTON: Americans head to the polls on Tuesday in midterm elections that could reshape the balance of power in Washington and determine how much room President Donald Trump has to pursue his agenda during the final two years of his second term.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are being contested. Voters in 36 states are also due to elect governors.

Republicans currently control both chambers of Congress, but their majorities are narrow, leaving Democrats with an opportunity to take control of at least one chamber.

The outcome will determine whether Trump retains unified Republican control of Congress or faces a legislature increasingly prepared to challenge his administration.

The House election involves all 435 voting seats, with Republicans holding a slim majority ahead of polling day.

In the Senate, 33 seats are being contested in regular elections, alongside two special elections in Florida and Ohio.

The special elections will fill the remaining terms of seats vacated when Marco Rubio became secretary of state and JD Vance became vice president.

Republicans hold 53 Senate seats, compared with 45 Democrats and two independents who caucus with Democrats. Democrats need a net gain of four seats to secure a majority.

Control of either chamber could significantly affect the administration’s ability to pass legislation, approve appointments and shape federal spending.

Cost of Living

Economic concerns, particularly the cost of living and fuel prices, have featured prominently in the closing stages of the campaign.

Republicans have sought to defend their congressional majorities by highlighting Trump’s economic policies, tax proposals, immigration agenda and national security priorities.

Trump has campaigned extensively for Republican candidates, holding rallies and urging supporters to turn out for the party.

Democrats, meanwhile, have presented the elections as an opportunity to impose greater congressional oversight on the president. Their campaign has focused on healthcare, inflation, voting rights and government accountability.

Trump’s Political Stakes

The midterms are widely viewed as a major test of the president’s political standing, although congressional elections are decided across individual districts and states rather than through a single national vote.

A Democratic-controlled House could intensify investigations into the administration and make it harder for Trump to advance his legislative priorities.

A Democratic majority in the Senate would also give the opposition greater influence over presidential appointments and congressional negotiations.

However, even if Democrats take control of both chambers, Trump’s veto powers and the Senate’s legislative procedures would limit their ability to enact major policy changes without Republican support.

The elections will therefore determine not only which party controls Congress but also the political and legislative constraints facing the White House during the second half of Trump’s presidency
