ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly condemned Houthi attacks on merchant vessels and seafarers navigating the strategic Bab Al-Mandab Strait, reaffirming its unwavering support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security amid rising regional tensions.
Speaking at a United Nations Security Council debate on emerging technologies and maritime security, Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, warned that attempts to weaponise critical maritime routes threatened international shipping, regional peace and economic stability.
“Pakistan strongly condemns the nefarious designs by Houthi militia to weaponise Bab Al-Mandab, attacking merchant shipping and seafarers navigating the strait,” Jadoon said.
He stressed that such attacks undermined maritime security and threatened the peace and development of regional countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, which had faced repeated Houthi attacks.

“Pakistan reaffirms its unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and stands in complete solidarity with its leadership and people,” the ambassador said.
Strategic Waterways Under Growing Pressure
The latest tensions have highlighted the vulnerability of critical maritime corridors, particularly Bab Al-Mandab and the Strait of Hormuz, through which significant volumes of international trade and energy supplies pass.
Disruptions to shipping through these waterways could affect global supply chains, energy security, food supplies, and economic stability, with consequences extending far beyond the Middle East.
Pakistan emphasised the importance of protecting maritime navigation and ensuring that commercial vessels and their crews can operate without threats or disruption.
Pakistan Reaffirms Support for Regional Stability
The renewed attacks come amid growing regional tensions and uncertainty surrounding Yemen’s prolonged conflict, which began in 2014 when Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa.
The conflict has caused widespread destruction and contributed to one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
Pakistan’s statement at the Security Council underscores Islamabad’s continued diplomatic support for Saudi Arabia and its commitment to regional stability, maritime security, and protecting international trade routes.
