ISLAMABAD: Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and across the world are observing Black Day today (Tuesday) to mark the 79th anniversary of the arrival of Indian troops in Srinagar on October 27, 1947, and draw international attention to the unresolved Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

The observance aims to reaffirm the Kashmiri people’s demand for the right to self-determination and urge the international community to facilitate a peaceful settlement in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

On the call of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Kashmiris in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Azad Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the world are observing the day through protests and other activities to highlight their political aspirations and the longstanding dispute.

According to the APHC, Indian troops entered Srinagar on October 27, 1947, an event that Kashmiris and Pakistan regard as the beginning of India’s occupation of the territory. The dispute has remained unresolved for nearly eight decades.

The Hurriyat leadership has urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, to play an effective role in resolving the dispute and ensuring that the Kashmiri people can exercise their right to self-determination.

Pakistan reaffirms support for Kashmiri people

On Jammu and Kashmir Black Day, Pakistan stands in solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), honouring their courage, resilience and enduring aspirations for dignity, peace and self-determination, says a statement issued by the foreign office on Tuesday.

Pakistan reaffirmed its unwavering political, moral and diplomatic support for the Kashmiri people and calle upon the international community to facilitate a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Pakistan also observes the day to express solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir and reiterate its political, moral and diplomatic support for their right to determine their future.

In a statement issued ahead of the observance, Pakistan’s Foreign Office reaffirmed the country’s unwavering support for the people of IIOJK, honouring their courage, resilience and enduring aspirations for dignity, peace and self-determination.

Pakistan called upon the international community to facilitate a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and SAFRON Engineer Amir Muqam, in his message on the occasion, described Black Day as a reminder of the suffering and sacrifices of the Kashmiri people and the international commitments concerning their right to self-determination.

He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to advocating a peaceful and just settlement based on relevant UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

The observance also brings renewed attention to India’s August 5, 2019, decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional status. Pakistan and Kashmiri political groups have criticised the move, raising concerns about the territory’s political future and the rights of its residents.

The Kashmir dispute remains a major point of contention between Pakistan and India. As Kashmiris observe Black Day, Pakistan has renewed its call for international engagement to secure a peaceful settlement that takes into account the aspirations and right to self-determination of the Kashmiri people.
