RIYADH: The coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government has released aerial footage showing what it described as strikes against a Houthi weapons-smuggling operation in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.

The nearly six-minute black-and-white video, dated October 16, shows apparent airstrikes hitting trucks, small boats and structures that appear to be storage facilities.

The footage was posted on social media by Major General Turki Al-Malki, spokesperson for Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, shortly before midnight on Saturday.

The coalition did not disclose further details about the weapons shipments, the specific targets or the extent of the damage.

Strategic Red Sea Port

Hodeidah, on Yemen’s western coast, is a strategically important port city under Houthi control and a key focal point in the country’s conflict.

The reported strikes come amid continued concerns over weapons transfers and threats to maritime security in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways.

The Houthi movement has fought Yemen’s internationally recognised government since seizing the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014, derailing the country’s political transition and triggering years of conflict.

The Houthis have launched missiles and drones towards Saudi Arabia in previous years, targeting military facilities and civilian infrastructure. The group has also threatened shipping through the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, a vital maritime chokepoint connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

The passage is an important route for commercial shipping and energy supplies travelling between Europe and Asia through the Suez Canal.
