BAKU, Azerbaijan: China has urged Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities to take concrete and effective measures against terrorist groups operating on Afghan territory, stressing that eliminating security threats is essential for regional peace and stability.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during the seventh summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held in Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku.
Addressing regional leaders, Wang outlined a four-point initiative aimed at strengthening security cooperation, political dialogue and economic development across Asia.
China Calls for Counterterrorism Action
Wang described Afghanistan as an important component of Asia’s regional security framework, emphasising that instability in the country could have wider implications for neighbouring states.

He called on the Taliban administration to adopt practical measures to eliminate terrorist groups and prevent Afghan territory from becoming a source of regional security threats.
Beijing has repeatedly expressed concerns about extremist organisations operating in Afghanistan, particularly groups posing potential cross-border security risks.
Regional Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance
The Chinese foreign minister also highlighted the importance of coordinated regional efforts to support Afghanistan’s economic recovery and humanitarian needs.
He urged neighbouring countries and international partners to maintain assistance while encouraging conditions necessary for sustainable development.
China has maintained informal diplomatic and economic engagement with the Taliban authorities since their return to power in August 2021.
However, Beijing continues to emphasise counterterrorism commitments as an important element of its relations with Kabul.
Afghanistan’s Regional Security Role
Afghanistan’s security situation remains a concern for regional governments seeking to prevent terrorism and strengthen cross-border cooperation.
China’s latest appeal reflects its broader approach of combining diplomatic engagement, economic assistance and security expectations.
Beijing maintains that effective action against terrorist organisations, alongside regional cooperation, is necessary to establish lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan.
