ISLAMABAD: An AI-generated image is circulating on social media falsely showing former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi being arrested following the imposition of Governor’s Rule in the province.

On Sunday, the federal cabinet approved emergency measures and the imposition of Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over rising terrorist attacks and growing security concerns in the province.

President Asif Ali Zardari signed the summary forwarded by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the federal cabinet approved the move to impose emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The government cited Articles 232 and 234 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which deal with the proclamation of an emergency and the exercise of constitutional powers in circumstances where a provincial government is unable to function in accordance with the Constitution.

However, shortly after the development, a fake, AI-generated image showing Sohail Afridi being taken into custody began circulating on social media platforms.

The circulation of the fabricated visual highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing authentic information from AI-generated content, particularly during politically sensitive situations.

The viral image serves as a reminder that the authenticity of a photograph must be established independently, even when it emerges amid genuine political developments. Readers should avoid sharing the image as authentic evidence of Sohail Afridi’s arrest.
