WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate halt to attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure, announcing an “energy ceasefire”.

However, Kyiv said it had not been informed of the agreement, and Moscow had yet to confirm its participation.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios that Trump’s announcement was news to him, but said Kyiv was ready to accept a ceasefire if Russia agreed to it.

“If Russians agree to an energy ceasefire, Ukraine will agree,” Zelensky said, according to Axios.

The announcement came amid rising tensions between Washington and Kyiv over Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and US efforts to secure an end to the war.

It also followed a similar announcement by Trump in mid-September, when neither Russia nor Ukraine confirmed that an agreement had been reached and both sides continued striking energy infrastructure.

Earlier on Sunday, Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s position that it was willing to stop attacking Russian refineries if Moscow halted its strikes on Ukrainian power infrastructure. Any agreement would require “real guarantees”, he said.

In an interview with Axios after Trump’s announcement, Zelensky said Kyiv was ready to comply but wanted clarity on when the ceasefire would begin.

“If President Trump negotiated it with Putin, please tell us when the ceasefire begins. We are ready, and we will accept it,” he said.

Russia had not publicly commented on Trump’s latest announcement.

The announcement followed several days of strained relations between Trump and Zelensky over Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries.

On Saturday, Trump warned Zelensky that he had “better damn well stop” the attacks. He also called for Ukrainians to replace their president through elections, accusing him of missing opportunities to reach a deal with Moscow.

Zelensky responded on ABC’s This Week on Sunday that Ukraine would hold elections if Russia agreed to a 60-day ceasefire.

“Please tell Putin, give us two months, 60 days of total ceasefire, 60 days, and we will organise elections,” Zelensky said.

The latest tensions also followed Trump’s announcement on Friday of an agreement to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports in an effort to reduce soaring fuel prices.
