PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have welcomed the federal government’s decision to impose emergency and governor’s rule in the province, describing the move as a “day of deliverance” from years of corruption and poor governance under the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-led provincial government.

Residents said they supported the federal government’s decision and expressed hope that the new administrative arrangement would improve security, restore peace and accelerate development in the province.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa citizens lauded the federal government’s decision to ensure peace and stability in the province.

In Peshawar, citizens distributed sweets and expressed joy over the imposition of an emergency aimed at restoring law and order, describing the occasion as a “Youm-e-Najat” from the PTI government.

Similar scenes were witnessed in other districts of the province, where people celebrated the federal government’s decision with enthusiasm.

They said the federal government’s decision marked the beginning of a new era of peace and stability across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“We are distributing sweets to celebrate our deliverance from the PTI provincial government,” residents said.

They said that the provincial government had diverted resources intended for development towards sit-ins and protest marches, leaving the province lagging behind in public services and development.

“For over a decade, a clique characterised by rampant corruption has held sway over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” residents said.

“We support the federal government’s decision and extend our best wishes for the new set-up,” they added.

Residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa celebrated the change in government, with people seen dancing to the beat of drums and expressing their joy.

Residents welcomed the change, expressing hope that the new administration would address public concerns.

Some residents said the previous government had failed to fulfil its promises, leaving people facing a range of problems.

They expressed hope that the new administration would prioritise development projects, improve law and order, and resolve public grievances.

People in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, distributed sweets to celebrate the imposition of emergency rule in the province.

People in various parts of the province are observing a “Day of Deliverance” and a “Day of Gratitude”.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also welcomed the federal government’s decision, saying the people of the province wanted peace, stability and prosperity. “The people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa welcome the presidential declaration and desire peace, stability, and prosperity.”

Governor Kundi said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa residents stood alongside security agencies in combating terrorism and disorder, adding that strict action would be taken against those who took the law into their own hands.

“The public stands shoulder-to-shoulder with security agencies against terrorism and chaos. Strict action will be taken against those who take the law into their own hands,” Faisal Karim Kundi said.

The public reaction followed the federal government’s decision on Sunday to impose emergency and governor’s rule in the province after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the summary forwarded by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The federal cabinet took the decision at an emergency meeting chaired by the prime minister over the deteriorating security situation and the need to strengthen counterterrorism efforts.

The government invoked Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, which provide for emergency measures and presidential action in the event of a failure of constitutional machinery in a province.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the cabinet had taken note of the provincial government’s “deliberate disengagement from the fight against terrorism”.

The decision followed security assessments prepared by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police and intelligence agencies amid a rise in terrorist attacks and concerns over the provincial government’s cooperation with federal authorities.
