KYIV, Ukraine: Russian drone strikes have disrupted traffic across two major bridges in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, while a separate attack on a residential building killed one person and wounded at least two others, local authorities say.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the Southern Bridge, which connects the eastern and western parts of the city across the Dnipro River, had been completely closed to traffic in both directions on Friday.
Russian drones struck support structures on the Southern Bridge on Thursday, prompting a temporary closure while officials assessed the structure’s safety.
The bridge subsequently reopened to traffic and Metro train services. However, Klitschko said it had been hit again on Thursday night, leading to further restrictions.
The authorities did not provide details of the damage or say how long the restrictions would remain in place.
Residential Building Hit
Ukraine has been concerned about possible attacks on major transport bridges since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. The latest strikes have disrupted movement across key routes in the capital.
Separately, emergency services said one person was killed, and at least two others wounded when a Russian strike hit a 25-storey residential building in Kyiv’s Darnytsky district.
The victim was found as firefighters brought a blaze caused by the explosion under control, emergency officials said.
Kyiv has faced repeated Russian drone and missile attacks in recent months, keeping the city on frequent air-raid alert.
The latest strikes add to the pressure on the capital’s infrastructure and residents as Russia’s war against Ukraine continues.
