The return of the pandas will restore a popular attraction at Zoo Atlanta, where giant pandas had been part of the zoo’s programme for 25 years.
Meet Ping Ping and Fu Shuang
Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, were both born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China.
Their exact arrival date has not been disclosed. Zoo Atlanta has said further details about their arrival will be announced later.

The new pair follows the departure of Lun Lun, Yang Yang and their daughters Ya Lun and Xi Lun, who returned to China in October 2024 after Zoo Atlanta’s previous agreement with Beijing expired.
Zoo Atlanta announced in April 2026 that it had established a new International Cooperative Research Agreement on Giant Panda Conservation with the China Wildlife Conservation Association, paving the way for Ping Ping and Fu Shuang to travel to Atlanta.

The new arrangement is framed around conservation and research as well as the public appeal of the animals. Zoo Atlanta’s previous 25-year partnership with China produced seven panda offspring between 2006 and 2016.
What Is Panda diplomacy?
China’s use of giant pandas as diplomatic gifts and, later, long-term conservation loans is widely known as “panda diplomacy.”

One of the most famous chapters began in 1972, when US President Richard Nixon visited China and relations between Washington and Beijing began to thaw. China subsequently sent two giant pandas, Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing, to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC. They arrived on April 16, 1972, and quickly became international celebrities.
The pandas symbolised the emerging relationship between the two countries, while their popularity helped create a lasting public connection alongside diplomatic engagement.

China later moved away from permanent gifts and toward cooperative arrangements involving long-term loans, conservation and scientific research.
The latest arrival in Atlanta therefore carries both a conservation purpose and a diplomatic symbolism. As Xi put it, the giant panda remains an “envoy” of friendship between China and the United States.
