ISLAMABAD: The historic city of Jhang in Pakistan’s Punjab province is preparing to welcome adventure seekers and culture enthusiasts from across the country and abroad as it hosts its first-ever Jhang Desert Rally and three-day cultural festival from October 9 to 11, aiming to showcase the district’s desert landscape, rich heritage and distinctive traditions.

Organised by the District Administration Jhang under the initiative of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the event will combine motorsport, traditional activities, folk entertainment and cultural celebrations to promote tourism and highlight the unique identity of this historic Pakistani district.
95 km desert track to host rally
Deputy Commissioner Jhang Babar Sahib Din announced details of the event during a press conference at the rally’s starting point, attended by former members of the Punjab Assembly, district administration officials, community representatives and members of civil society.

The rally will feature several categories, including women, stock and veterans, besides bike racing and other competitive activities. Around 100 experienced drivers and riders from across Pakistan are expected to participate, while tourists from different parts of the country and abroad are also expected to attend.
The highlight will be a challenging 95-kilometre desert track through the Thal region, offering participants and spectators an opportunity to experience desert adventure alongside Jhang’s natural landscape.

The district administration said the event is intended to be more than a racing competition, providing a platform to introduce visitors to Jhang’s historical heritage, desert beauty, traditions and renowned hospitality.
Jhang has a distinctive geographical and cultural identity, with around 6,000 square kilometres of the Thal region, the confluence of the Chenab and Jhelum rivers, historical sites, folk traditions and a rich cultural heritage.

Three days of culture and entertainment
The festival will feature a range of cultural and recreational activities, including horse riding, horse dancing, traditional sports, folk music, kabaddi, volleyball and a musical night.
A food court and dedicated camping facilities will also be established for participants and visitors in the Thal region.

The district administration said the festival would give tourists an opportunity to experience Jhang’s local traditions, folk heritage, traditional sports and artistic expressions while exploring its desert landscape.
