Amid blackouts, fuel shortages, and a lack of staff, Cuba’s National Zoo, home to nearly a thousand animals, is struggling to preserve one of the region’s most valuable genetic reserves. The park, located about 20 km from Havana, struggles to maintain a collection that includes endangered species such as rhinoceroses, tigers, jaguars, and hippos. “We were without electricity for exactly 23 days, but this group (of workers) didn’t just sit around waiting for things to fall from the sky. We looked for solutions,” National Zoo Director Juan Carlos Corella tells AFP.
