WASHINGTON: Twenty-five winners of the prestigious Fields Medal have warned that the rapid race among artificial intelligence companies to solve major mathematical problems could damage the future of the field.
In a joint letter published on mathematician Terence Tao’s blog, the medal winners said the objectives of AI companies and the mathematical community were increasingly misaligned. They warned that the growing focus on artificial intelligence solving famous problems could threaten the deeper purpose of mathematical research.
The signatories include mathematicians from nearly five decades of Fields Medal history, including Pierre Deligne, who received the honour in 1978, and Yu Deng, who was recognised this year.
The mathematicians argued that solving problems is not only about finding answers but also about developing understanding, creativity and insight. They said these processes require time, collaboration and human interaction.
AI and mathematics debate intensifies
The warning came shortly after OpenAI announced that an unreleased AI model had solved the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems that have challenged mathematicians for generations.

OpenAI said the achievement involved thousands of AI agents working in parallel over an 88-hour period. The announcement sparked debate within the mathematical community over the role of artificial intelligence in advanced research.
The letter also follows concerns raised by mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and Anthropic researcher Levent Alpoge, who released AI-assisted work related to similar equations. Buckmaster accused OpenAI of adopting an approach developed by him and Alpoge after their research became known.
OpenAI denied having access to their work.
The Fields Medal winners said the wider question was how society could benefit from AI advances while preserving the values behind intellectual work.
They called for urgent discussions among mathematicians, technology companies and policymakers as artificial intelligence continues to transform research and other areas of human knowledge.
