LONDON: Four unidentified projectiles struck two ships near Oman’s Khasab on Thursday, setting one vessel on fire and leaving the condition of the second ship unknown, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
UKMTO said the incident occurred in waters near Khasab, a strategically located port in Oman’s Musandam Governorate at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.

The master of another ship in the area reported seeing the projectiles strike the two ships, UKMTO said. The witness ship was about six nautical miles from the location of the incident at the time.
The maritime security organisation did not identify the ships involved or provide details on the origin of the projectiles.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in and around the Gulf region, where commercial shipping has faced increased risks from military activity and attacks in recent months.

Khasab lies close to the Strait of Hormuz, a major global shipping route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supplies passes. Any incident involving commercial ships in the area can raise concerns over the safety of maritime traffic and the security of energy shipments.
UKMTO, which operates under Britain’s Royal Navy, provides security information and warnings to commercial shipping in the region. Further details about possible casualties, damage to the ships or the cause of the incident were not immediately available.
