Pakistan’s Major General appointed UN Force Commander
It is pertinent to mention that earlier this month, United Nations Secretary-General appointed Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi, as the new Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), marking another significant recognition of Islamabad’s longstanding contribution to UN peacekeeping.
The country has a long and proud history of contributing troops, officers and commanders to UN peacekeeping missions around the world.
The appointment of Major General Qazi further underscores the country’s commitment to multilateralism and to the UN’s efforts to promote international peace and security.
For Islamabad, the appointment is not only a professional honour for a senior military officer but also a recognition of the country’s decades-long contribution to UN peacekeeping.
Pakistani personnel have consistently served in challenging missions across different regions, earning a reputation for professionalism, discipline and dedication.

Pakistan rejects India’s bid for permanent UN Security Council seat
Islamabad has also rejected India’s claim to a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, with Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, saying New Delhi has “no credentials whatsoever” to stake such a claim.
The country has consistently opposed the creation of new permanent seats, including for India, Germany, Japan and Brazil, and has instead called for an expansion of non-permanent membership as part of any future reform of the Security Council.

“There are several countries, including our neighbour obviously, which has no credentials whatsoever to even stake a claim for permanent membership of the Security Council,” he said, in an apparent reference to India.
