KABUL: United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan Richard Bennett has condemned a recent explosion near a school in Kabul’s predominantly Hazara neighbourhood of Dasht-e Barchi, describing the repeated attacks against the community as deeply disturbing and calling for an independent investigation.
Bennett on Tuesday condemned the blast near Sham-e Hedayat Private School in Mahdia Township, western Kabul, where dozens of pupils were reportedly injured.
“I condemn the heinous attack harming numerous children near a school in Dasht-e Barchi,” Bennett said in a statement posted on social media. He urged authorities to conduct a full and independent investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The explosion occurred on Monday evening at or near the school in the Mahdia Township area of Dasht-e Barchi, according to reports from residents and other sources.
At least 47 pupils were wounded in the blast and taken for medical treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the explosion, however, remain unclear. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, while the Taliban authorities have not issued an official statement addressing the incident.
Repeated attacks on Hazaras
The blast has renewed concerns over the security of Afghanistan’s Hazara community, which has repeatedly been targeted in deadly attacks, particularly in western Kabul.
Dasht-e Barchi, home to a large Hazara population, has witnessed a series of devastating attacks in recent years, including assaults targeting schools and other places frequented by civilians.

Bennett’s condemnation comes amid continued international concern over the protection of ethnic and religious minorities in Afghanistan and the Taliban authorities’ responsibility to ensure the safety of civilians.
The UN expert has repeatedly called for greater protection of vulnerable communities in Afghanistan and for perpetrators of attacks against civilians to be held accountable.
