ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s devastating monsoon season continues to exact a heavy toll, with the death toll surging to 151 and injuries climbing to 449 across the country, according to the latest data from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
As the nation grapples with the aftermath of relentless rainfall, a fifth spell of monsoon rains is set to begin, prompting urgent warnings from disaster management authorities.
The new weather system, expected to arrive on Saturday, has put authorities on high alert. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and northeastern and southern Punjab during the evening and night of August 8.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned that the fifth monsoon spell could trigger urban flooding, river overflows, and landslides in vulnerable areas across the province. Several districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Multan, remain at high risk.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reports fresh casualties
The northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to bear the brunt of the monsoon fury. Authorities confirmed that at least nine people have lost their lives, and seven others sustained injuries in rain-related incidents, including flash floods and the collapse of roofs and walls. The heavy downpours have also damaged 103 houses, with rescue and relief operations ongoing in the affected areas.
PDMA warns of widespread disruption
The PDMA has issued a province-wide advisory, cautioning that the incoming weather system could significantly impact several districts across Punjab. The authority has specifically warned of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas, increased water levels in rivers and canals, and landslides in hilly regions.

Light to moderate rainfall has already brought relief from the heat in parts of Punjab, including Lahore, where cloudy conditions have prevailed. Similar weather is expected in cities such as Sargodha, Chiniot, Multan, and Faisalabad ahead of the fresh spell.

For Saturday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted hot and humid weather across most of the country. However, rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms is expected at isolated places in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and northeastern/southern Punjab during the evening and night.
