LOS ANGELES, USA: Britney Spears was navigating one of the most painful moments of her life while filming the music video for her hit song Overprotected (Darkchild Remix), according to the director who witnessed the emotional scene unfold behind the cameras.

Director Chris Applebaum recently opened up about the heartbreaking incident that took place on set, revealing how the pop superstar received a devastating text message from Justin Timberlake just before shooting, yet managed to deliver one of her most memorable performances.

The moment it all fell apart

Applebaum recounted that Britney was preparing to film when she suddenly glanced at her flip phone and quietly walked away to her trailer. Concerned, the director followed to check on her. She said little, instead simply showing him the screen. The message read, “It’s over.”

Applebaum said he instantly knew the text had come from Justin Timberlake, confirming that Britney had just experienced her first major heartbreak. The couple had been together for three years before their highly publicised split in 2002.

Turning pain into performance

Rather than allowing the moment to derail the shoot, Applebaum attempted to lift Britney’s spirits. He encouraged the singer to channel those raw emotions into her performance and told her that one day Justin would watch the video and see exactly what he had lost.

According to the director, Britney returned to the set and delivered what he described as one of the finest performances he had ever witnessed from her. The Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) video went on to become a fan favourite and further cemented her status as a pop icon.

A story that matches her memoir

The revelation aligns with what Britney wrote in her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, where she disclosed that Timberlake ended their three-year relationship via a text message. The book offered fans a rare glimpse into the personal struggles she endured behind the glitz and glamour of her career.

More than two decades later, Applebaum said he continues to admire Britney for her resilience and professionalism in the face of such emotional turmoil.
