UNITED NATIONS: Marking the seventh anniversary of India’s August 5, 2019 actions in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Pakistan has told the UN Security Council that there should be “no place for state terrorism” anywhere in the world and urged the international community to ensure that counterterrorism is not misused to suppress legitimate struggles for self-determination.
Speaking during a UN Security Council meeting in New York, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations said August 5 remained a tragic reminder of India’s “illegal and unilateral measures” in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Broken promises
He said that seven years ago, the people of Kashmir—who had already endured more than seven decades of what he described as injustice, broken promises and denial of their UN-guaranteed right to self-determination—were subjected to a new wave of state repression.
The envoy said more than 900,000 Indian occupation forces had imposed severe restrictions and committed actions that Pakistan described as the worst form of state terrorism against an unarmed civilian population.
Pakistan believes that there must be zero tolerance for blatant perpetration of state terrorism – in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and in other situations of foreign occupation.

No tolerance for state terrorism
He stressed that there should be no tolerance for such manifestations of state terrorism, whether in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir or in any other situation involving foreign occupation.
The ambassador also called on the international community to ensure that counterterrorism is not used as a pretext to suppress internationally recognised and legitimate struggles for freedom.
He said the narrative of counterterrorism must not be misused to deny or curtail the inalienable right to self-determination of peoples living under foreign occupation, adding that such practices were unacceptable under international law.
Pakistan has consistently maintained that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute should be resolved in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Rallies across Pakistan
Rallies, seminars and solidarity events were held across Pakistan on Wednesday to mark Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir, with people from all walks of life reaffirming support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and their right to self-determination.
Rallies and solidarity events were held across all four provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and districts nationwide, where participants reaffirmed solidarity with the Kashmiri people, condemned India’s August 5, 2019, actions and renewed Pakistan’s commitment to the Kashmir cause.
Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir is observed annually on August 5 to express solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and reaffirm Pakistan’s support for their right to self-determination.
The day marks the anniversary of India’s August 5, 2019, decision to revoke Articles 370 and 35A of its Constitution, ending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Unwavering support
Pakistan’s Foreign Office in a statement on Wednesday also reaffirmed its unwavering support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on the occasion of Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir, marking the seventh anniversary of India’s August 5, 2019, constitutional changes concerning the disputed territory.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan solemnly commemorated the day and described India’s actions of August 5, 2019, as illegal and unilateral, saying they sought to alter the internationally recognised disputed status of Jammu and Kashmir.
It paid tribute to the courage, resilience and steadfastness of the people of IIOJK and reiterated Pakistan’s continued support for what it described as their just struggle for the right to self-determination.
It said Pakistan remained committed to supporting the people of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and reaffirmed its longstanding position that the dispute should be resolved peacefully in line with international law and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
