ISLAMABAD: Mediators Pakistan and Qatar have expressed satisfaction with the first round of technical-level talks between the US and Iran held in Switzerland, adding that positive momentum must continue so that negotiations can be successful.
The views were expressed during a phone call between Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on Wednesday, a PM house statement said.
During the conversation, Qatari Amir congratulated the Prime Minister on Pakistan’s successful diplomatic efforts that led to the historic signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the US and Iran. He also appreciated the Prime Minister’s leadership, and expressed Qatar’s full support for Pakistan’s peace efforts.
“The Prime Minister thanked His Highness the Amir for Qatar’s consistent and steadfast support in the peace efforts, which had succeeded, thanks to the untiring efforts of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as well as the important roles played by brotherly countries, including Qatar,” the statement said.

“Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the first round of technical level talks held in Burgenstock and stated that positive momentum must continue so that negotiations could be successful. In this regard, the two leaders agreed that it would be important to safeguard the talks from detractors,” it added.
The Qatari Amir extended his condolences over the tragic death of a Pakistani national in the recent fire at the Barzan gas facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City.
Expressing gratitude for the Amir’s concern, the Prime Minister commended the Qatari leadership for its continued support and hospitality toward the Pakistani community in Qatar, which now numbers more than 300,000 people.
Recalling his visits to Doha earlier this year, the Prime Minister renewed his invitation to His Highness the Amir to visit Pakistan at the earliest opportunity. In response, the Amir conveyed his intention to visit Pakistan later this year to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional developments.
The two leaders also agreed to maintain close coordination and strengthen cooperation between their countries in the days ahead.

US, Iran agree 60-day roadmap for final deal
Pakistan and Qatar on Monday released a joint statement after the high-level US-Iran direct talks in Switzerland. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir attended the talks as mediators. The Qatari Prime Minister also attended the talks as mediator.
According to a joint statement the US and Iran have agreed on a 60-day roadmap towards a final agreement following the conclusion of high-level talks in Switzerland mediated by Pakistan and Qatar.
The first session of negotiations under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding concluded at the Burgenstock resort, bringing together representatives of Iran, the United States, Pakistan and Qatar.
The mediating countries described the Lake Lucerne Summit as having been conducted in a “positive and constructive atmosphere” and said “encouraging progress” had been achieved, including the establishment of a mechanism for further technical negotiations.
