ISLAMABAD: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has thanked the government of Pakistan for its contributions to peace, development and prosperity in the region after the United States and Iran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding last week to end the conflict.

The Iranian President made the remarks during a media briefing alongside Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Tuesday.

President Pezeshkian added that the signing of the Islamabad MoU between Iran and the United States shows Tehran’s confidence in Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

The Iranian President said relations between Pakistan and Iran were unique, rooted in deep historical, cultural, and religious bonds. He added that the people of both countries shared a common future and destiny.

Pezeshkian expressed confidence that bilateral ties between Tehran and Islamabad would continue to expand and strengthen across various fields.

The Iranian president added that he had productive meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, during which bilateral relations and regional developments were discussed.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his remarks, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to continuing its mediation efforts between Iran and the United States, saying Islamabad would play its role until a lasting and honourable peace is achieved.

The prime minister also commended Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his outstanding contribution to securing the ceasefire and facilitating the signing of the Islamabad MoU.

He added that the progress achieved in the peace process would not have been possible without the support of friendly countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt.

Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari congratulated Masoud Pezeshkian on the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and expressed hope that the ongoing technical-level negotiations would culminate in permanent peace in the region.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled support for Iran’s peace, stability, national unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan for its positive and constructive efforts in support of peace and dialogue and appreciated the support extended by Pakistan during the recent challenging circumstances.

He said Iran attaches great importance to its relations with Pakistan and looks forward to further expanding cooperation in political, economic, security, and regional matters.

The Iranian President arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday on an official visit. The one-day visit comes just days after Pakistan and Qatar facilitated direct talks between Iran and the United States in Switzerland, under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which established a 60-day roadmap for negotiations aimed at reducing regional tensions.

Earlier, upon arrival in Islamabad, the Iranian President was given a red-carpet welcome and a guard of honour on arrival. He was received by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, and other senior leadership.
