WASHINGTON: The Democratic members of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee have criticised President Donald Trump over his administration’s decision to provide sanctions relief to Iran, arguing that the move contradicts the approach previously outlined by US officials during negotiations with Tehran.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Democratic lawmakers questioned the timing of the sanctions relief, claiming it was granted before any tangible progress had been achieved on key issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme and its support for regional proxy groups.

The lawmakers argued that the administration had repeatedly maintained that any easing of sanctions would be conditional on Iran addressing concerns related to its nuclear activities and what Washington describes as support for militant organisations across the Middle East.

Iran sanctions relief draws Democratic backlash

“While ending this illegal war is preferable to recklessly escalating it, the administration’s actions are inconsistent with its own stated position on how a deal with Iran should be pursued,” the Democrats said.

They further contended that neither Iran’s nuclear programme nor its alleged backing of proxy groups had been adequately addressed through the negotiations, yet Tehran had already received extensive sanctions relief.

According to the committee members, the concessions represent a significant departure from the conditions previously set out by Trump administration officials and risk undermining the leverage Washington had sought to maintain during talks with Iran.

The criticism highlights growing political divisions in Washington over the administration’s handling of relations with Tehran, even as diplomatic efforts continue following recent progress in negotiations aimed at reducing regional tensions.

The United States and Iran agreed on a 60-day roadmap towards a final agreement following the conclusion of high-level talks in Switzerland mediated by Pakistan and Qatar on Sunday.

The first session of negotiations under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding concluded at the Burgenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne on Monday, bringing together representatives of Iran, the United States, Pakistan and Qatar.

In a joint statement, the mediating countries described the Lake Lucerne Summit as having been conducted in a “positive and constructive atmosphere” and said “encouraging progress” had been achieved, including the establishment of a mechanism for further technical negotiations.
