ISLAMABAD: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday, marking his first foreign visit since the Iran-Israel conflict involving the United States earlier this year, underscoring Islamabad’s growing diplomatic role in efforts to ease tensions in the Middle East.
The one-day visit comes just days after Pakistan and Qatar facilitated direct talks between Iran and the United States in Switzerland, under the auspices of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which established a 60-day roadmap for negotiations aimed at reducing regional tensions.
Given a red-carpet welcome and a guard of honour on arrival, the Iranian president was received by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, and other senior leadership, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was also present.
State Banquet for Iranian President
President Asif Ali Zardari will host a state banquet in honour of President Pezeshkian, underscoring the importance Pakistan attaches to its relationship with Iran.
Senior government officials, cabinet members, parliamentary leaders, diplomats, and prominent personalities are expected to attend the banquet.
The visit is expected to further strengthen Pakistan-Iran relations at a time when both countries are seeking greater regional cooperation and economic integration.
Follow-Up to High-Level Contacts
President Pezeshkian’s visit follows a series of high-level contacts between Islamabad and Tehran, including a recent telephone conversation between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Iranian President after the signing of the Islamabad Peace Deal.
Officials in Islamabad view the visit as another milestone in Pakistan’s emerging diplomatic profile following its active role in promoting dialogue among key regional and international stakeholders.
The trip is expected to result in renewed commitments to bilateral cooperation and further coordination on regional peace initiatives.
