WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Thursday criticised a House of Representatives vote to limit his authority to conduct military operations against Iran, calling the move “unpatriotic” amid negotiations to end the war with Iran.
The remarks came a day after the House approved a war powers resolution directing the withdrawal of US armed forces from war with Iran, marking a rare rebuke of the Republican president during a ceasefire and diplomatic push to end months of conflict.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said lawmakers had acted at a critical moment in negotiations.
“Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Dumocrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump wrote.

“Who would do such an unpatriotic thing. They know where the negotiations stand,” the US President added.
The president also accused Democrats of being motivated by what he described as “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and criticised the four Republican lawmakers who joined Democrats in supporting the measure.
“They’re GRANDSTANDERS! They should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump said.
The House passed the resolution on Wednesday by a vote of 215-208, with four Republicans breaking ranks to support the Democratic-led measure.
The resolution seeks to remove US armed forces from hostilities against Iran and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
Despite the congressional challenge, Trump expressed confidence that negotiations could soon produce an agreement.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, he said a breakthrough could come within days. “It could happen … over the weekend,” Trump said.
“I hear the negotiation itself is going very well, actually,” he added, referring to Pakistan-led diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the US-Israeli war in the Middle East that began on February 28.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said communication channels between Tehran and Washington remained open.
“Communications with the Americans have not been cut off, and messages have been exchanged regarding the need to stop aggression against Beirut, but no tangible progress has been made in the negotiation process,” Iran’s Tasnim news agency quoted Araghchi as telling Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen television channel.
