RIYADH: The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has announced the full readiness of its laboratories for the Hajj season, introducing comprehensive operational plans aimed at protecting pilgrims and strengthening emergency response measures related to food and medicine safety.

As part of these efforts, the authority has ensured that its laboratories operate around the clock while expanding their capacity to handle the significant seasonal increase in workload, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Tuesday.

These measures are being carried out in line with the highest international standards.

The laboratories are responsible for receiving and analysing samples collected by field inspection teams, while also carrying out urgent testing to safeguard pilgrims’ health.

They play a key role in supporting epidemiological investigations into suspected food poisoning incidents and in monitoring operational performance indicators.

According to the latest figures, the SFDA has processed 465 requests, analysed 857 samples, and completed 1,856 laboratory tests, highlighting the efficiency and rapid response of its operations during the Hajj season.

To further accelerate response times, the authority has introduced a “Fast Track Mechanism”, enabling samples to be received, sorted, and analysed within one hour of arrival.

This system allows immediate preventive measures to be taken during emergency situations.

The SFDA also relies on advanced laboratory technologies and equipment, including genomic analysis techniques to identify pathogens and trace sources of infection with precision, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) devices for the rapid detection of microbes, and ELISA systems to identify toxins and food poisoning agents accurately.

In addition to diagnostic testing, the authority is actively engaged in specialised research in cooperation with relevant organisations.

This includes conducting safety evaluations and analyses of ready-made meals, contributing directly to enhanced food safety standards for meals served to pilgrims.

Throughout all stages of laboratory operations, the SFDA follows strict quality and biosafety standards while utilising data analysis to support informed decision-making.

These operations are conducted through close coordination with relevant authorities, reinforcing efforts to protect the health and safety of pilgrims.

The initiatives reflect Saudi Arabia’s continued commitment to serving pilgrims and providing all necessary resources to ensure their well-being.

They also highlight the SFDA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen safety measures throughout the Hajj season.
