ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday stressed the need for diplomacy to end the US-Iran conflict amid Strait of Hormuz tensions.

The Deputy PM was speaking with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on the phone, where the two sides exchanged views on evolving regional developments, a statement issued by the Foreign Office.

“Foreign Secretary Cooper reiterated appreciation of Pakistan’s efforts to promote engagement and mediation between the parties for lasting peace in the region,” it said.

Ishaq Dar, during the call, reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy in pursuit of regional and global peace and stability.

They also discussed the global economic implications and broader consequences of the conflict.

Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination on bilateral matters, as well as on regional and international developments of mutual interest.

The conversation comes at a time when the United States military said on Monday it destroyed six Iranian small boats in the Strait of Hormuz after they allegedly targeted commercial vessels, in a fresh escalation despite the ceasefire between the US and Iran.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation was carried out by military helicopters and guided-missile destroyers operating in the region.

Earlier, the United Arab Emirates said that Iran launched a fresh barrage of missiles and drones targeting the country, with air defence systems intercepting the incoming threats.

The UAE Ministry of Defence said four cruise missiles were detected heading towards “various areas across the country”, adding that three were successfully intercepted over territorial waters while one fell into the sea.

Pakistan has played a key role in facilitating dialogue between the US and Iran, including hosting the first high-level contact in decades last month in Islamabad.

However, efforts to convene a second round have faced delays, and officials acknowledge significant differences remain.

Pakistan’s role highlights its continued engagement in supporting diplomatic communication channels during the crisis.

The entire world has appreciated Pakistan’s role as peacemaker by making the very first appeal for a ceasefire, and hosting the Islamabad Talks between Iran and the US.
