LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board on Monday named Babar Azam as captain of the Team of the Year for the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), after he finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer and guided his side to the title.

Babar, who captained Peshawar Zalmi, scored 558 runs in 11 innings, including two centuries, and played a central role in his team’s title-winning campaign.

Zalmi clinched their second PSL title, and first since 2017, after defeating tournament debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen by five wickets in the final in Lahore.

The PCB said the team was selected by a five-member panel drawn from the league’s commentary team.

A separate Emerging Team of the Year, featuring young Pakistani players, was also announced.

The 11th edition of the PSL featured 44 matches played between March 26 and May 3 in Lahore and Karachi.

Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis, also of Peshawar Zalmi, was included as wicketkeeper-batter after scoring heavily during the season.

Fakhar Zaman of Lahore Qalandars secured a spot following another prolific campaign, while Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood represented Multan Sultans in the side.

Usman Khan of Hyderabad Kingsmen was also named in the XI after consistent performances with the bat.

Shadab Khan, captain of Islamabad United, was included as an all-rounder after taking 17 wickets and contributing with the bat.

He was also named the tournament’s best all-rounder.

Hyderabad Kingsmen’s Hassan Khan and Hunain Shah were selected, alongside Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Peshawar Zalmi spinner Sufyan Muqeem earned a place after taking 22 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 14.40.

He was also named both Player of the Tournament and Best Bowler.

England pacer Richard Gleeson of Islamabad United completed the bowling line-up.

Hassan Ayaz of Quetta Gladiators was named as the 12th player.

No players from Karachi Kings or the RawalPindiz were included in the final XI.
