BODRUM, Türkiye: At least 18 migrants lost their lives after an inflatable boat sank off Türkiye’s Aegean coast early Wednesday, in yet another tragic reminder of the dangers faced by those attempting irregular crossings into Europe.

According to Reuters quoting Türkiye’s coastguard, the vessel was detected around 03:00 GMT near the Bodrum district in the western province of Muğla. Authorities reported that the boat, powered by an outboard motor, failed to comply with repeated warnings to stop and attempted to flee.

Shortly after, the situation worsened as harsh weather and turbulent sea conditions caused the vessel to take on water and eventually sink. The incident triggered an immediate search and rescue response.

A coastguard helicopter along with three patrol boats were dispatched to the scene. Rescue teams managed to save 21 people, while recovery efforts for additional victims continued throughout the day. Officials have not yet confirmed the total number of passengers on board, nor the boat’s exact departure point or intended destination.

The Aegean Sea remains one of the most heavily used—and perilous—routes for migrants seeking to reach Europe. Thousands attempt the crossing each year, often relying on overcrowded and unseaworthy boats.

Türkiye continues to host millions of refugees, primarily from conflict-affected regions such as Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, many of whom undertake risky journeys in search of safety and better opportunities.

This latest tragedy underscores the ongoing humanitarian challenges and the urgent need for safer migration pathways and coordinated international responses.
