ISLAMABAD: Quetta Gladiators have appointed former Pakistan fast bowler Sohail Tanvir as their bowling coach for the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 11, which runs until May 3.
Tanvir, a member of the Gladiators’ title-winning squad in 2019, will officially join the team in his new role on Tuesday, replacing Wahab Riaz in the coaching setup.
The change comes after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) prevented Riaz—who is currently serving as mentor of the Pakistan women’s team—from holding dual roles, citing conflict of interest concerns.
Initially, Riaz had been granted a No-Objection Certificate (NOC), allowing him to work with a PSL franchise, which led to his appointment as both director and bowling coach of the Gladiators. However, the PCB later withdrew this permission following a review, reinforcing its policy that full-time board officials cannot simultaneously take on roles in domestic franchise cricket.
The coaching adjustment arrives at a time when Quetta Gladiators are placed fifth in the PSL 11 standings, having collected two points from their opening two matches.
After losing their first game by 14 runs to Karachi Kings, the former champions bounced back strongly with a convincing 60-run victory over debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen.
Quetta’s next fixture is set to take place against three-time champions Islamabad United at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Thursday.
