CAIRO, Egypt:  The Council of the League of Arab States has unanimously approved the appointment of Egypt’s nominee, former Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy, as Secretary-General for a five-year term, marking a significant leadership transition within the pan-Arab body.

The move awaits formal endorsement at an upcoming Arab Summit in Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Sunday.

The decision was made during the 165th session of Arab foreign ministers, held via videoconference under the presidency of Bahrain.

The Arab Republic had formally nominated former Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy for the position of Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, following the completion of the second term of the current Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, which concludes on June 30 this year.

Who is Nabil Fahmy

Nabil Fahmy, 75, was the sole candidate for the position.

Widely regarded as one of Egypt’s most distinguished diplomats, he has built a decades-long career spanning foreign policy and academia, according to the SPA report.

He served as Egypt’s ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2008 and later as foreign minister from July 2013 to June 2014.

Beyond his diplomatic roles, Fahmy has made notable contributions to higher education.

He founded the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo, where he now holds the title of dean emeritus, and has contributed extensively to the field of international relations.

He also comes from a prominent diplomatic family, being the son of Ismail Fahmy, who served as Egypt’s foreign minister from 1973 to 1977.
