ISLAMABAD: The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres has appreciated and extended his full support for Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the Iran war.

He expressed these views during a telephonic conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday.

“We exchanged views on the evolving situation in the West Asia and its implications for international peace and security,” Ishaq Dar said in a post on X.

“I underscored that the UN remains indispensable to conflict prevention and resolution, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to diplomacy and dialogue as the only viable path to sustainable peace,” he said.

The Secretary-General expressed appreciation and extended his full support for Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic efforts in pursuit of peace and stability in the region.

The development comes as Pakistan has assumed a central role in efforts to mediate between the United States and Iran, working alongside Ankara and Cairo. Officials say indirect communication between Washington and Tehran is ongoing through structured message exchanges rather than direct talks.

In a post on X on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed that “US-Iran indirect talks are taking place through messages being relayed by Pakistan.”

He added that a 15-point US framework has been shared with Iran and is currently under consideration, while the “brotherly countries of Turkiye and Egypt” are also supporting the initiative.

Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson has also said that the country will continue to play a “principled and proactive” role in promoting de-escalation in the Middle East.

Tahir Andrabi said Islamabad remained actively engaged with regional and international stakeholders to push for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution.

“We remain actively and constructively engaged… consistently advocating for immediate de-escalation, cessation of hostilities and an irreversible path towards a peaceful resolution,” spokesperson Andrabi said during his weekly media briefing.
