ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has decided not to hold military parade this year on the occasion of Pakistan Day, March 23, due to ongoing Gulf oil crisis and the consequent austerity measures announced by the government.

“It has been decided that the Pakistan Day Parade and associated ceremonial events shall not be held on 23rd March 2026,” according to a statement issued by Prime Minister’s Office Media wing on Tuesday.

However, the day will be observed with dignity and respect through a simple flag-hoisting ceremony at appropriate levels. This step has been taken to ensure that the nation’s resilience and steadfast commitment to the ideals of Pakistan Day remain in harmony with the broader austerity measures.

All ministries, divisions, and government departments have been advised to mark the occasion in a solemn and respectful manner, ensuring that the significance and spirit of the day are maintained despite the scaled-down celebrations.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chairing a meeting in Islamabad on Monday had assured that adequate stocks of petroleum products are available across the country.

He emphasised that economic stability and public relief remain top priorities of the governmnet. The meeting came in light of the evolving international situation affecting energy markets.

The Prime Minister noted that the committee tasked with ensuring economic stability has made prompt decisions, which have helped maintain a continuous and reliable supply of fuel for the public. Consultations are ongoing to introduce additional measures aimed at providing further relief to citizens.

Meanwhile a Pakistani oil tanker successfully cleared the Strait of Hormuz, becoming one of only a small number of vessels to exit the Arabian Gulf since hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran intensified earlier this month.
