CAIRO: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has strongly condemned the recent drone attack on the strategic Port of Salalah in Oman, which caused significant damage to several fuel storage tanks within the port.

In a statement on Thursday, Aboul Gheit expressed shock at the targeting of a nation that has long played a constructive role in regional diplomacy, mediating to save the Middle East and Iran from the consequences of conflict.

He added that deliberately attacking civilian and critical infrastructure in the Gulf region constitutes a direct threat to the safety and daily lives of ordinary citizens.

The Secretary-General further warned that the incident poses serious environmental and safety risks, including pollution of the marine environment, potential sinking of large oil tankers in a semi-enclosed sea, damage to desalination plants, and the risk of explosions at oil facilities.

He described such actions as a violation of international humanitarian law and a dangerous precedent that undermines regional security.

Since strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran in late February ignited the wider Middle East conflict, Iran has carried out attacks targeting its regional adversaries and strategic infrastructure.

Earlier, Kuwait International Airport came under a drone attack when multiple unmanned aerial vehicles targeted the facility, causing limited property damage but no casualties.
