ISLAMABAD: Afghanistan continues to grapple with a deteriorating political, humanitarian, and security crisis, as the Taliban struggle to govern effectively, according to Ali Maysam Nazary, head of foreign relations for the National Resistance Front (NRF) of Afghanistan.

Speaking to BBC World News, Nazary described the situation in Afghanistan as “dire,” saying that the country has been hijacked by a terrorist organisation since August 2021. “As every day passes, the political crisis, humanitarian crisis, economic crisis, and security crisis is becoming much worse,” he said.

The Taliban’s return to power came after the withdrawal of US and NATO forces in August 2021. The collapse of the Afghan government triggered widespread fears of human rights violations, economic collapse, and the resurgence of extremist groups.

“Afghanistan has once again become a hub for both regional and international terrorist organisations, hosting around 21 groups that pose a direct threat to regional and global security.” – Ali Maysam Nazary, NRF

“Afghanistan has once again become a hub for both regional and international terrorist organisations, hosting around 21 groups that pose a direct threat to regional and global security,” Nazary warned.

He criticised the Taliban’s ability to govern, stating they have shown “complete incompetence” and that there is currently no law and order in the country. “Basically, it’s a state of anarchy at the moment,” he said.

When asked about the lack of mass uprisings similar to those recently seen in Iran, Nazary noted that Afghanistan’s historical and social circumstances are different. He explained that the Afghan people have traditionally not risen against oppressors within a short timeframe.

However, he highlighted that the National Resistance Front, which is primarily based in the Panjshir Valley and other northern regions, has managed to expand over the past year.

“That itself shows that the people are convinced that resistance against a terrorist group that has hijacked the country is the only solution.” – Ali Maysam Nazary, NRF

Formed by former members of the Afghan security forces and political leaders who opposed Taliban rule, the group represents one of the few organised forces actively resisting the new regime.

“That itself shows that the people are convinced that resistance against a terrorist group that has hijacked the country is the only solution,” he said, pointing to ongoing pockets of opposition.

The National Resistance Front of Afghanistan continues to operate despite facing significant logistical and military challenges, emphasising the continued unrest and the fragile state of governance across the country.
