ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to depart today for a two-day official visit to Qatar aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations and expanding economic cooperation between the two countries.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visit is being undertaken at the invitation of the Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The prime minister will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, along with other ministers and senior officials.

During his stay in Doha, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to hold bilateral talks with the Qatari leadership covering the full spectrum of relations, including political engagement, trade and investment, energy partnership, infrastructure development, and manpower export.

Pakistan and Qatar share close fraternal ties marked by regular high-level exchanges and cooperation at regional and international forums.

The visit is expected to provide fresh impetus to economic collaboration, particularly in the energy and investment sectors, while also allowing both sides to exchange views on key regional and global developments.

Officials say the trip reflects the shared commitment of both countries to deepen strategic cooperation and promote mutual prosperity.

Qatar hosts a large Pakistani diaspora, with more than 200,000 to 300,000 nationals contributing significantly to the economic development of both countries. Labour cooperation remains a key pillar of ties, with Qatar committing to expanding opportunities for Pakistani workers in ongoing infrastructure projects.

Energy and trade form the backbone of bilateral relations. Qatar supplies around 3.5 million tons of LNG annually to Pakistan under long-term agreements, making it a critical energy partner. Bilateral trade has reached approximately $2 billion, with Pakistan exporting agricultural products such as rice and meat, while importing petroleum and chemical products.

Investment cooperation has also deepened. In late 2023, Qatar pledged $3 billion in direct investments and deposits to support Pakistan’s economy, with future collaboration expected in renewable energy, food security, and infrastructure development.

Defence and security cooperation remains strong, highlighted by joint exercises and Pakistan’s deployment of over 4,000 personnel to assist with security during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Diplomatically, Pakistan has consistently appreciated Qatar’s mediation efforts, particularly regarding Gaza and regional dialogue initiatives. Cultural and educational ties are also expanding, with Pakistan benefiting significantly from Qatar’s “Educate A Child” initiative and cultural exchanges such as the “Manzar” exhibition in Doha.
