COLOMBO: Australia have won the toss and elected to bat first against Ireland in their Group-stage encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The match, being played at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, is an important fixture for both sides as the tournament enters a crucial phase. Australia will be aiming to strengthen their position in the group and maintain momentum heading into the latter stages, while Ireland will be hoping to pull off an upset against one of the favourites.
Australian captain Mitchell Marsh said the pitch looked good for batting early on, and his side wanted to put runs on the board and apply scoreboard pressure.
Ireland skipper Paul Stirling, meanwhile, backs his bowlers to make early breakthroughs and restrict Australia on a surface that could offer assistance under lights.
Australia have made a solid start to their World Cup campaign, with their experienced top order and pace attack proving key in previous matches. Ireland, on the other hand, will look towards their all-round depth and disciplined bowling to challenge the reigning champions.
The two teams have met several times in T20 internationals, with Australia holding a clear advantage. However, Ireland have shown they can compete strongly against top sides in recent years.
With conditions expected to favour batting, Ireland will need a strong bowling effort early on, while Australia will be eyeing a total that puts them firmly in control.
