MONITORING DESK
ISLAMABAD: The House of Representatives Oversight Chairman James Comer is seeking information from the Department of Treasury about the financial transactions of the Biden family and he is calling on many former executives of Twitter to testify at a public hearing.
The new series of letters from the committee comes as the Republican members of the House are trying to flex their investigative power and fulfill the promises to search out Biden family finances and alleged political influence over tech companies following Twitter’s story in 2020 about Hunter Biden and his laptop.
Comer said that now the Democrats have no longer one-party rule in Washington, accountability, and oversight are coming. The investigation is a top priority for the Republican members of the House during the 118th Congress, US media reported on Wednesday.
Biden family’s associates come under scrutiny
Comer requested Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to provide his panel with bank activity reports for President Biden’s son Hunter Biden, his brother James Biden and several other family associates of the family and their companies.
Comer wrote to Yellen that the committee is investigating the President’s involvement in the foreign business practices of his family and international influence peddling schemes.
Comer repeatedly tried to get these reports known as Suspicious Activity Reports when Republicans were in the Minority in the House but he was largely unsuccessful.
He has previously pointed to these reports as evidence of potential wrongdoing by the members of Joe Biden’s family. However, such reports are inconclusive and do not necessarily indicate wrongdoing. Financial institutions file millions of suspicious activity reports every year but only a few lead to law enforcement inquiries.
After the Comer request on Wednesday, the White House accused Republicans of engaging in political stunts.
