ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s federal government has announced the early release of salaries and pensions for Christian federal employees and pensioners ahead of Christmas, a move aimed at easing financial pressure as the cost of festive goods rises sharply.

According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Finance, payments will be disbursed on December 22, allowing beneficiaries to make timely arrangements for Christmas celebrations. The advance payment applies to all eligible Christian employees and pensioners working under the federal government.

The ministry has instructed the Controller General of Accounts in Islamabad to make the necessary arrangements to ensure the smooth and timely release of funds.

The move comes as inflation weighs heavily on Christian families preparing for Christmas. Prices of Christmas decorations, including trees and lights, have increased by 50 to 70 percent compared to last year, while the cost of clothing, shoes, and gifts has reportedly doubled in some cases.

Christian community leaders and clergy have welcomed the decision. Meanwhile, churches across the country have begun preparations for the festive season, including decoration, repainting, and renovation. Christian homes and neighbourhoods are also setting up Christmas trees, while markets and shopping centres are witnessing increased activity as families purchase decorations and gifts.

In a related development, authorities in Rawalpindi and Islamabad have announced comprehensive security measures for Christmas celebrations.  Security measures include the installation of CCTV cameras and walk-through gates at churches, mandatory security checks, and the deployment of lady police officers. Special security will be provided on Christmas Eve, December 24, and Christmas Day, December 25.
