DOHA, Qatar: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday urged global efforts to build inclusive societies based on equality, solidarity and human rights, saying genuine social progress depends on dignity and equal opportunity for all.
Addressing the World Summit for Social Development in Doha, President Zardari called for poverty eradication, decent work for all, and more responsive global institutions, particularly to meet the needs of the Global South.
He added that true social progress can only be achieved when all individuals are treated with dignity and given equal opportunities to contribute to national development.
President Zardari said we must ensure global institutions are inclusive and responsive especially to the needs of Global South.
The President stated that Pakistan’s vision for inclusive and sustainable development is fully aligned with the spirit of the Doha Declaration.
President Zardari highlighted that Pakistan’s flagship Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) has empowered over nine million families through income assistance, as well as healthcare and educational support.
He noted that this landmark initiative serves as a model for the world and has transformed millions of lives across the nation.
The President reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), stating that the government aims to raise the literacy rate to ninety percent and ensure that every child has access to education.
Through the National Internship Programme, he added, Pakistan is providing young people with opportunities to build their skills and contribute to the country’s progress.
Addressing the challenges of climate change, the President said Pakistan is investing in resilient adaptation strategies to ensure that economic growth remains green, inclusive, and sustainable.
He also warned of a growing threat in the form of the weaponisation of water, expressing regret over the other party’s violation of the Indus Waters Treaty. He stressed that such tactics cannot and will not succeed.
The President also called for the resolution of the Palestinian and Kashmir disputes in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.
