PARIS: Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and American pop superstar Katy Perry appear to have confirmed their relationship after being photographed holding hands during an evening out in Paris, sparking global media interest in one of the most unexpected celebrity pairings of the year.
Celebrity news site TMZ published video footage showing Trudeau, 53, and Perry, 41, walking hand in hand before getting into a car after attending a cabaret event in the French capital.
Trudeau was seen assisting the Firework singer into the back seat as photographers called out.
Neither Trudeau nor Perry have publicly commented on their relationship, but the appearance appeared to confirm months of speculation following multiple sightings of the pair together.
The outing coincided with Perry’s 41st birthday celebrations over the weekend and is widely seen as their first public appearance as a couple.
Summer dinner in Montreal
Reports of a relationship between the former Canadian leader and the pop icon first surfaced in July, when the two were spotted dining together in Montreal.
Their connection reportedly deepened over the following months, with the pair photographed together on a yacht in Santa Barbara in October.
Sources quoted by People magazine said the relationship has been “thriving”, with both “fully invested” in making it work despite their busy schedules.
“Katy has been flattered by Justin’s consistency and care,” one source told People. “He’s shown that he’s committed and really cares about spending time with her. It’s clear that he values the connection, and so does Katy.”
Another source, quoted by People magazine, said, “They both have busy schedules but make time for each other and share a strong connection. Katy didn’t expect to fall for somebody so soon, but Justin checks all the boxes – he’s charming, respectful, and has a great sense of humour.”
From politics to pop: an unlikely pairing
The reported romance comes as both Trudeau and Perry navigate major transitions in their personal and professional lives.
Trudeau, who led Canada from 2015 until his resignation earlier this year, separated from his wife, Sophie Grégoire, in 2023 after 18 years of marriage. The couple share three children.
Perry ended her long-term relationship with British actor Orlando Bloom earlier this year. The two share a five-year-old daughter, Daisy Dove.

According to People, Trudeau has entered “a more grounded and content phase” of his life following years of political and personal turbulence.
“Justin has had a lot of upheaval in recent years, both in politics and in his personal life,” a Canadian social source said.
“He’s a much happier person now, less stressed, and intrigued by Katy. They have fun together, laugh a lot, and talk about everything.”
‘Surprising life twist’ for Perry
An insider close to the singer said the relationship came as a surprise even to her. “Dating Justin is something she never saw coming, but she’s really enjoying this surprising life twist,” the source said.
During a recent concert in London, Perry appeared to allude to her new relationship status when a fan proposed to her from the audience.
